New Year traditions

In January, the new year starts. People celebrate differently around the world. Check out these New Year traditions!

Austria

Here in Austria, lots of people dance a waltz at midnight. We also have lucky charms like a pig or a horseshoe. And of course, we have fireworks!

horseshoe = Hufeisen

New York, USA

In New York, many people go to Times Square. A big ball comes down a flagpole at midnight. There are also fireworks and confetti, and people sing “Auld Lang Syne”.

In Australia, New Year is in summer. Lots of people celebrate it outdoors, with barbecues or picnics in their garden or at the beach.

Denmark

In Denmark, broken dishes mean good luck. So, people smash plates and cups in front of their friends’ houses.
